Life After 70: How ChatGPT and AI Can Make Our Old Age Meaningful and Connected
Introduction
I am 73 years old. At this stage of life, I have realised that time is one of the most precious things we possess. Money can be earned again, many things can be purchased, but the time that has passed never returns.
Life changes with age, and our responsibilities, priorities and expectations also change. When we look back, we find that a major part of our life was spent raising our children, educating them, supporting our families and fulfilling our social responsibilities.
Today, our sons and daughters are busy with their studies, careers and jobs. They have to work hard, compete with others and adjust themselves to the demands of a rapidly changing world. Many of them live in big cities or even abroad to build a better future.
Naturally, elderly parents and grandparents often have to spend much of their time alone at home. Their needs and expenditures may be limited, but their emotional needs, memories and desire for communication remain very much alive.
Can modern technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), help us make this stage of life more meaningful?
I strongly believe the answer is yes.
1. The Changing Family Structure and Life After 70
In earlier times, particularly in Indian villages, joint families were common. Grandparents, parents, children and other relatives lived together. There was always someone to talk to, share experiences with or ask for advice.
The situation has changed considerably.
Education, employment, economic competition and modern lifestyles have encouraged younger generations to move to cities and other countries. This is natural and, in many ways, necessary for their progress.
However, the elderly members left behind sometimes experience loneliness.
We should not blame our children for being busy. They are working hard to establish their careers and provide better opportunities for their families. At the same time, older people must learn to organise their lives independently and discover new ways to remain active, happy and connected.
2. Time Is Precious: Keep Yourself Busy and Positive

At 73, I feel that we should not waste our remaining time simply waiting for somebody to visit or call us.
We have valuable experiences, knowledge and memories accumulated over many decades. Instead of keeping them locked in our minds, we can share them with others.
Reading books, writing articles, gardening, walking, learning new skills and communicating with friends are some activities that can make our daily lives interesting.
We should also remember that old age does not mean the end of learning. In fact, it can be the beginning of a new journey.
3. ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence: A New Companion for Senior Citizens
One of the most interesting developments of modern technology is Artificial Intelligence.
Tools like ChatGPT have opened new possibilities for ordinary people, particularly senior citizens.
Earlier, many of us had ideas and memories but did not know how to express them properly in writing. Some people hesitate because of their English, grammar or lack of computer knowledge.
ChatGPT can help overcome these difficulties.
We can use it to:
- Convert our memories and personal experiences into well-written articles.
- Improve English grammar and vocabulary.
- Prepare stories about childhood, family and village life.
- Write blogs and social media posts.
- Prepare speeches, letters and messages.
- Organise old photographs and create captions.
- Generate ideas for videos and YouTube channels.
- Learn about new subjects and understand modern technology.
Most importantly, we can use our own experiences and ideas as the foundation. AI simply helps us present them in a better and more attractive way.
Our memories are our own; AI helps us decorate and preserve them.
4. Preserve Old Memories Through Blogging and Videos
Every elderly person has a story to tell.
Our childhood, education, village traditions, festivals, family responsibilities, professional journeys and social experiences are valuable parts of our personal history.
Unfortunately, many of these memories disappear with time if we do not record them.
Blogging and video-making offer excellent opportunities to preserve them.
Through a personal blog like MY DIARY PAGES, we can write about:
- Our childhood and school days.
- The changing lifestyle of Indian villages.
- Traditional festivals and customs.
- Experiences of raising children.
- Lessons learned during our professional lives.
- The differences between past and present generations.
- Our hopes and expectations for the future.
We can also make short videos and share them on YouTube.
A simple mobile phone and an internet connection are enough to begin. We do not need expensive cameras or professional studios.
Our experiences may inspire young people and help future generations understand how society has changed.
5. From Village Life to Small-Town Living
Many of us have moved from villages to small towns in search of better facilities.
Medical services, roads, educational institutions, transportation and other essential facilities are often more accessible in towns.
This change brings comfort and convenience, especially during old age.
However, our minds still remain connected to our villages.
We remember the peaceful surroundings, traditional houses, green fields, forests, rivers, festivals and the friendly atmosphere of village life.
Sometimes, we expect our villages to have the same medical, educational and road facilities that we enjoy in towns. These expectations are natural.
We should also use our knowledge and communication platforms to highlight the problems faced by rural communities.
Through articles, photographs and videos, we can bring attention to issues such as poor roads, drinking water, healthcare, education and migration.
Technology gives ordinary citizens an opportunity to express their concerns and contribute to positive social change.
6. Connect With Children Living in Big Cities and Abroad
One of the biggest advantages of modern technology is that geographical distance is no longer a major barrier to communication.
Our sons, daughters and grandchildren may be living in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, London, America or other parts of the world.
Although we cannot meet them every day, we can remain connected through mobile phones, WhatsApp, video calls and social media.
We can share photographs, family memories, festival greetings, personal achievements and daily experiences.
We should understand that our children have their own responsibilities and busy schedules. Instead of expecting them to remain available all the time, we can develop our own interests and routines.
A healthy relationship requires understanding from both generations.
A little time, a loving message and an occasional video call can bring happiness to both parents and children.
7. Use Facebook and X to Share Experiences and Social Concerns
Social media platforms such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) allow us to communicate with people beyond our immediate family and neighbourhood.
We can share our articles, photographs, videos and opinions on subjects that matter to us.
For example, we can discuss:
- Problems of senior citizens.
- Rural development and migration.
- Environmental protection.
- Education and healthcare.
- Traditional culture and festivals.
- The importance of family values.
- Positive experiences of ageing.
However, we should use social media responsibly. We must avoid unnecessary arguments, misinformation and spending excessive time scrolling through posts.
Technology should serve us, not control us.
8. Senior Citizens Should Learn and Adopt New Technology
Some elderly people hesitate to use smartphones, computers and AI tools because they believe these technologies are meant only for younger generations.
This thinking needs to change.
We can start with simple activities, such as making a video call, sending photographs, searching for information or asking ChatGPT a question.
Gradually, we can learn to write articles, create videos and share our experiences online.
We should not feel embarrassed when we make mistakes. Learning is a continuous process, irrespective of age.
At the same time, we must protect our privacy, avoid sharing passwords or banking details and verify important information received online. AI can sometimes make mistakes, so its answers should not be accepted blindly.
9. Old Age Is Not a Period of Inactivity
I believe that being 70 or 73 does not mean that our useful life has ended.
We may not have the same physical strength that we enjoyed in our youth, but we have something equally valuable: experience.
We can guide younger people, encourage children, preserve family traditions and contribute to society through our knowledge and writing.
We should keep our expectations realistic, take care of our health and remain financially and emotionally independent as far as possible.
We should also learn to enjoy our own company.
Conclusion: Make Every Remaining Day Meaningful
Life after 70 offers a different perspective. We begin to understand the value of time, relationships, memories and simple happiness.
Our children are busy building their futures. We should appreciate their efforts and encourage them to move forward. At the same time, we must not allow loneliness or inactivity to dominate our lives.
Modern technology, especially ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence, has given senior citizens a wonderful opportunity to learn, write, create and communicate.
We can preserve our memories, share our village experiences, write blogs, make videos and remain connected with family members living far away.
I would like to conclude with a simple thought:
Age may reduce our physical energy, but it should never reduce our curiosity, creativity and willingness to learn.
Let us use our time wisely, keep our minds active and make every remaining day meaningful.
After all, life is not merely about how many years we have lived; it is also about how meaningfully we use the time still available to us.
