Rottweilers have a double coat that provides insulation, which means they can struggle to regulate body temperature in extreme heat. Additionally, they are a brachycephalic breed (short-muzzled), which makes breathing more difficult in hot weather. If not properly cared for, Rottweilers can suffer from:
- Dehydration - Loss of fluids can lead to lethargy, dry gums, and excessive panting.
- Heatstroke - A life-threatening condition that can cause seizures, vomiting. and collapse.
- Burns & paw pad injuries - Hot pavements and surfaces can burn their paws.
- Provide Fresh Water: Always keep a bowl of fresh, cool water available. Change it frequently to keep it clean.
- Use Multiple Water Bowls: Place water bowls in different locations around your home and yard.
- Carry Water on Walks: Bring a portable water bottle and bowl whenever you take your Rottweiler outside.
- Add Ice cubes: Adding ice cubes to their water can make it more refreshing.
- Hydrating Treats: Offer frozen fruits like watermelon (without seeds) or homemade dog-safe ice treats.
- Walk Early or Late: Exercise your Rottweiler during the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
- Avoid Pavement: Asphalt and concrete can become extremely hot and burn your dog's paws. Walk on grass or dirt paths instead.
- Take Shorter Walks: Reduce the duration and intensity of exercise to prevent overheating.
- Watch for Overheating Signs: If your Rottweiler pants excessively, stop and let them rest in the shade.
- Shade in the Yard: Set up a canopy, umbrella, or doghouse in a shaded area.
- Indoor Cooling: Keep your Rottweiler inside during peak heat hours, preferably in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated room.
- Cooling Mats and Beds: Invest in a cooling mat or an elevated dog bed to help regulate body temperature.
- Fans and Air Circulation: If you don't have air conditioning, use fans to keep the air moving and provide ventilation.
- Smaller, Lighter Meals: Heavy meals generate body heat, so feeding smaller portions more frequently can help.
- High Water-Content Foods: Include hydratig foods like cucumbers, and watermelon (without seeds)
- Avoid Overfeeding: Extra weight can make heat management harder. Maintain a healthy weight to keep your Rottweiler comfortable.
- Brush Regularly: Removing loose fur allows better air circulation. Use a de-shedding brush to reduce excess hair.
- Do Not Shave: A Rottweiler's coat acts as insulation, protecting them from both heat and sunburn. Shaving can cause overheating.
- Bath in Routine: Bathe your Rottweiler occasionally with cool water, but avoid over-bathing, as it can strip natural oils from their skin.
- Use Dog Sunscreen: If your dog has light-coloured fur on their nose to prevent sunburn.
- If You Must Travel: Ensure the car has air conditioning and make frequent water breaks.
- Emergency Plan: If you see a dog trapped in a hot car, contact local authorities immediately.
