Indian Army is known for its gallantry and sacrifice in the world.. Kumaon Regiment is one of the Infantry Battalion of Indian Army. The Kumaon Regiment is one of the oldest infantry regiments of the Indian Army. The regiment traces its origins to the 18th century and has fought in every major campaign of the British Indian Army and the Indian Army  including the two world wars, and is one of the highest  decorated regiments of the Indian Army.On 3rd November 1947 at Badgam valley in Kashmir against the Pakistani invaders.

The 4th Kumaon Regiment and the first Para Kumaon Regiment were nvolved in the battle of  Badgam. The 4th Kumaon Regiment was led by  Major Somnath Sharma, who was posthumously awarded the first Param Vir Chakra for his bravery. But one more soldier was awarded Maha Vir Chakra in that battle along with Major Somnath Sharma. His name was Naik Nar Singh Bisht who was awarded the first Mahavir Chakra for Kumaun Regiment.of Indian Army too.

Who was Naik Nar Singh Bisht?

There is a village Mallagaon, (Gangolakotuli), 30 km away from Almora. It is situated near Takula- Basoli-Someshwar.The ancestors of Naik Nar Singh Bisht were shifted from village Kharaun to Mallagaon (Gangolakotuli). Narsingh Bisht was born in a family of ordinary farmer. His father's name was Shri Uttamsingh Bisht. Most of the young boys of that period of Mallagaon joined army at that time.Naik Narsingh was unmarried, he sacrificed his life just after 4 years of his joining Army.The name of his brothers were-- Gusaisingh, Umedsingh, Bhawansingh (KRC), Bachisingh (KRC--War prisoner-1962 China war). Naik Narsingh was the youngest son of Sri Uttamsingh. Narsingh ground at Ranikhet is named after Naik Narsingh Bisht.

The Valour of Kumaon Regiment

Kumaon Regiment, in its original birth, was known as Hydrabad Regiment.  The regiment was formed in 1788 in Hydrabad. In the beginning, it possesed only 4 battalions. It was named Kumaon Regiment after Independence.  At present it has 22 regiments.The regiment occupies a memorable history of bravery by the efforts and devotions oft he officers and other ranks.The three Army Chiefs are at the name of this regiment.

3- General Taposhwar Narayan Raina (14 Kumaon)
