Trekking Route to the Kafani Glacier in Uttarakhand, (India)
Introduction:
The high-altitude region in Pithoragarh district consists the three main glaciers namely Pindari glacier, Kafni glacier and Sunderdhunga glacier. Kafni glacier is less known among tourists and neo-trekkers, rather than the Pindari glacier. Both the glaciers have the same route up to Dwali, at the confluence of the Pinder and Kafni River. From Dwali one trail leads to right to Kafni, while the another trail goes to Left to Pindari glacier. Kafni glacier is a hidden gem at an altitude of around 3,860 meters (12,664 feet) above sea level. This less crowded and serene glacier, offers trekkers a unique opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of the Himalayas. The Kafni glacier trek is known for its picturesque landscapes, diverse flora and fauna.

Trekking trails to Kafni Glacier:(Old Trek)
Day-1: In the last decade, the trek to Kafni Glacier would start from the quaint village of Loharkhet, which served as the base camp. At that time the trek would start, Dai-1 from Loharkhet to Dhakuri with a steep ascent, covering 13 km trek in 5-6 hours.
The Day-2 trek again from Dhakuri to Khati, covering 8 km distance in 4-5 hours. From Dhakuri, the trail goes downward to the village Khati, the last inhabited village.. Khati is situated on the bank of Pinder River. Now, Loharkhet, Dhakuri and Khati are illeminated from the trek and linked to Road- head.

New Trekking Trail to Kafni Glacie:
At present time, the road is linked to Khati, so, the trek starts from Khati and it serves as a base camp now. The new updated route to Kafni Glacier trek includes:
Day-1: Khati to Dwali
Distance: 11 km
Time taken: 6-7 hours
Elevation Gain: 2,575 meters (8,448 feet)
This trek from Khati to Dwali follows the Pinder River, through lush green forests and crossing several streams. Dwali is a small campsite located at the confluence of the Pinder and Kafni Rivers.
Day-2: Dwali to Kafni Glacier
Distance: 12 km
Time Taken 6-7 hours
Elevation Gain: 3860 meters (12664 feet)
The final patch from Dwali to Kafni Glacier is both challenging and rewarding. Trekkers climb up steadily, passing through rocky terrains and moraine fields. As the Glacier comes into view, the breathtaking panorama of snow-capped peaks and the pristine glacier itself recognize the endure worthwhile.
Day 3-4: Return Journey to Khati;Base Camp
It is not convenient to stay or camp in Kafni Glacier as it is very cold there.So, we follow the same trekking trail from Kafni to Khati,the Base camp. We take rest at Dwali after 4-5 km, descending trek. Next morning, we move from Dwali to Khati. Again to our homes as per the time spares.
Tips for Trekkers:
1- Physical and Mental Fitness:Take it guarantee,that you are physically and mentally fit for trekking in high-altitude.Follow, regular morning walk, jogging breathing exercise and cardiovascular exercises.
2- Acclimatization: When you are ready for trekking, take 1-2 days spare in hand for acclimatization in the base camp and en rote camping site. This will prove you an opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty, flora and fauna, local cuisine, traditions and culture. Stay hydrated, and avoid rapid ascents.
3- Trekking Gear and Clothing: Carry appropriate warm clothing, socks and water proof shoes.and a good quality of sleeping bag, rain coat and dry fruits.
4- Permission letter and Guide: The Forest department issues permission letters for trekking in high-altitude with the records of the trekkers movement. In case of accidents or calamities, the authorities actively provide proper help and rescue. The local guides are registered to the Tourism department with proper training. So, while moving , hire a registered guide with your team.
5- Practice Responsible Trekking: practice Responsible Trekking by leaving no trace in the Busgyals, streams and glacier. Try taking back all your waste, like plastic bottle, flaps to the dust bin en route. Don't leave your impact in this beautiful place.
Ideal Time to Trek Kafni Glacier:
The best time to undertake the Kafni Glacier trek is May to June and September to October. During these periods, the weather is relatively stable,and the views are clear. Monsoon season (July to August) should be avoided due to the possibility of heavy rains, storms, and landslides.
- By Train: Kathgodam / Haldwani are well connected by train from with several trains from major cities like Delhi, Lucknow. Kolkatta and Jammu. The journey from Delhi to Kathgodam takes around 6-7 hours by train. The distance from Haldwani to Kathgodam is only 6 km. Haldwani is more convenient for buses and taxies..
- By Road: Regular buses and taxies are available from Delhi and othe nearby cities' Distance - 300 km. (ISBT- Anand Vihar)
- Distance: Approximately 214 km
- Travel Time: 9-10 h0urs by bus or taxi/jeep
- Private Jeeps / Taxis: You can hire a private jeep / taxi from Kathgodam. This is convenient option for groups or those looking for more comfort. The rent is approximately 6 to 7 thousand.
- Shared Jeep / Taxi: Shared jeep are available and are a cost- effective option. These usually move from Kathgodam / Haldwani early in the morning. Per head charge is approximately Rs 900-1000..
- Bus Service: There is no direct bus service from Haldwani to Khati but KMOU Buses go up to nearby stations via Bageshwar / Kapkot. You can manage taxi from Bageshwar or Kapkot. Taxi and Jeeps are available from these stations. Do remember, move from Haldwani / Kathgodam in the morning. This is very convenient to connect further and arrival at the destination at right time.
- Kathgodam to Almora: The journey starts with a drive to Almora via Bhimtal, Bhawali,and Kainchidham, Almora, a beautiful hill station known for its scenic beauty covering a distance of 100 km and offering stunning views of the Himalayas...
- Almora to Bageshwar: The route then takes you to Bageshwar, a town situated at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomati rivers The road leads via Someshwar, Kausani and Baijnath- Garur market and then arrives Bageshwar covering a distance of 75 km.
- Bageshwar to Khati: From Bageshwar, the road leads to Khati via Kapkot, offering mesmerizing views of the surrounding valleys and mountains covering a distance of 54 km.
- Travel Early: Start your journey early in the morning to ensure you reach Khati village before dark. The journey during night in hills is not safe. These days the leopard wander in the surrounding of the villages. So, avoid night journey.
- Booking in Advance: During peak trekking season, it is advisable to book in advance to secure a spot, guest house, home stay or hotel.
- Carry Essential kits: Remote areas in hills are deprived of medical facilities, supply of rare food items, fruits but local fruits and essential food items are easily available. So, arrange necessary items like water bottle, snacks, dry fruits and a first - aid kit for the journey. The remote areas may not have frequent stops for supplies.
- Road Conditions: The road conditions in some places is not good especially in rainy season. So, it's a good idea to check the road conditions and weather before setting out a journey.
