SENGOLE , A SCEPTRE OF INDIAN HERITAGE
The tradition of Indian heritage giving Sengole, a symbol of sceptre s handed over at the time of power transfer in most of the states from olden time but overlooked in some last decades in independent India. This tradition is thousand years old giving a sceptre at the time of power transfer. It was given to Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru on 15th August 1947 at the time of Independence and kept in a Nehru galory of Anand Bhawan Museum in Allahabad now known as Prayagraj.
In Mauryan period 300 BC,the proof of Saingole giving tradition is found in Indian history. The Sceptre is considered a divine symbol not only on India but in most of the countries of the world. The Sceptre was handed over to King Charles at the time of coronation recently in England. It is concerned to Tamil cultural tradition which was applied at the time of power transfer to India by British government.
When the date of independence was declared for 15th August 1947, Pt Nehru discussed to C Raj Gopalachari about the formalities and traditions of power transfer in India. At this, C Raj Gopalachari told Pt nehru about the healthy custom of Chole Dynasty Power transfer custom by SAINGOLE. Pt. Nehru appreciated the idea and asked to C. Raj Gopalachari to make the arrangements like wise. He consulted to Ambalawan Desika Swamigal, the 20th Rajguru of non -brahminThiruvaiduthurei Adhinam Math. When the Saingole was handed over to Pt Nehru, the priest of Adhinam Math sprinkled Ganga jal (the water of River Ganga)over the Saingole and performed ritual rites chanting the songs (bhajan) of lord Shiva.
How This Custom Survived in Modi period
Last year at the celebration of Amrit Mahotsav of independence and during the function Kashi Tamil Sangamam, it was discussed about. Prime minister Modi studied a lot about this custom and got information in detail from the experts concluding its place in the new building of parliament. So, this sceptre was handed over to our Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28th May 2023 by the priests of Adhinam Math sprinkling Ganga jal and chanting ritual songs.
